As St. Olaf paused for a day of healing, reflection, and restoration on Thursday, April 13, 2023, 100 people contributed to this community canvas organized by the Flaten Art Museum. Titled Creating is Healing, the painting is a gift to the community and a reminder that healing is an art- it takes time and practice. Students Jessenia Prado '24 and Andrew Mazariegos '24 facilitated the project, inviting individual members of the St. Olaf community to contribute imagery toward a collective whole. The material was upcycled from a painting originally created for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Forum by Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History Wendell Arneson. The Honorable Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States and the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, addressed thousands of students, faculty, and distinguished guests while standing in front of this canvas.
