Prom Day
India ink on paper
2022
Since my single mom had to work 12-hour shifts, my sister Destiny stepped in to take care of the family as a high schooler. We did everything together. Because she had to raise me, she was not allowed to leave the house and go have fun with her friends. When she was getting ready for her high school senior prom, I couldn’t handle saying goodbye to her for seemingly the last time. Not only was she leaving me, but I would lose my one sense of stability in my low-income, single-family home. Now that I am 22 years old and she is 32 years old, I am happy she took the first leap to leave the house and start her life anew. I would not be here at St. Olaf if it wasn’t for her guidance and care. This graphic essay depicts my love for Destiny and our relationship.
